Fusion of Forms

From her early fascination with nature and drawing, Ann's artistic journey has been a dynamic fusion of art and biology. Armed with a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Biology from Colby College, she furthered her studies in biology at the graduate level, all while rediscovering a latent passion for art during a life drawing class. This revelation led her to earn a Master of Science in Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology, where she delved into cancer research for several years.

While immersed in the scientific realm, Ann's artistic spirit thrived through workshops and classes in various locations she called home. Her profound connection to nature is evident in her art, where she explores organic forms, capturing their energies through a masterful interplay of color, shape, light, and shadow. Embracing both realism and abstraction, Ann employs a diverse range of media, constantly pushing her creative boundaries.

Residing in Vassalboro, Maine, Ann is an active member of several art societies, including the Waterville Area Art Society, Pastel Society of Maine, Coastal Fine Arts Alliance of Maine, and Designing Women. She is a member of Art Space Gallery, a cooperative in Rockland. Ann's work, inspired by her Maine roots and global travels, has earned her accolades, with exhibit opportunities spanning local and national venues. Her art, adorned with awards, graces homes across the country, reflecting the captivating essence of her creative journey.

In Ann's artistic practice, she explores a diverse range of mediums including pastel and mixed media, yet recent exploration has centered around beeswax-based media, including both encaustic and cold wax techniques. Working with these materials, she constructs her pieces layer by layer, weaving a narrative that is influenced by her emotional and spiritual connection to the environment. Employing predominantly transparent pigments, Ann invites viewers to peer beneath the surface, offering them a glimpse into her creative process. Whether through carving into the beeswax, incorporating various elements, or achieving a highly tactile finish, Ann manipulates texture to evoke depth within the artwork. Often comprising 30 or more layers, Ann's paintings reflect the depth and complexity of our humanity and the world around us.
