Meet the Artist
Cassie Sano
Augusta, Maine
Plein Air Flair
Cassie Sano of Augusta is a contemporary realist painter who works with both watercolor and oil. With an abundance of inspiration right in her own backyard, her subject matter reflects her familiar surroundings as well as her love for Maine's beauty. Cassie mostly paints plein air, enjoying the challenge of viewing her subject matter in changing light and moving sky formations. With all senses engaged in the open air, she attempts to show the viewer what captures her heart in a given present moment.
From the time Cassie first held a crayon, she felt a connection to art that was so powerful it was as if her creative spirit had a life of its own. Although she says her growth in art has not been linear and her creative path has been full of stops and starts, twists and turns, finding her voice as a full-time artist has always been her life-long dream.
Cassie studied graphic design at Salem State University, and spent vacations over the years taking watercolor workshops with Marjorie Glick, and drawing and painting classes with Lisa Sawlit who taught her the techniques of the old masters. Cassie retired to Maine a few years ago when she began to dedicate more time, at long last, to her art. She studied technique under Carol L. Douglas of Rockport, Maine, and now teaches her own watercolor classes as well. Cassie is the organizer of the Kennebec Valley Plein Air Painters, a member of the Harlow Gallery and the River Arts Association.
