Inspired By Place

Margaret Leonard was born in Brunswick, Maine and went to Maine College of Art (then Portland School of Art) graduating in 1982 with a BFA in Painting. It was at art school that she obtained a strong foundation in composition, design, color interactions and seeing as a painter. Over the years Margaret has attended artist residencies which allowed her to work without daily distractions, providing new inspiration for her work. Her latest residency was a month in Prague, Czech Republic. Margaret loves to travel and experience different cultures, visiting museums, seeing local architecture and interacting with the local people.

Being brought up in the Maine countryside, Margaret had easy access to the natural world: birds, fields, woods, brooks and the ocean. Nature has always been one of her teachers and she has done many plein air paintings over the years. Currently she is working with acrylics and gouache on canvas, and sometimes she works in collage reflecting more abstract ideas.

As Margaret did in Prague, her series of the Frank Wood Bridge (Brunswick and Topsham) can be seen as a exemplary of how she is inspired by place.
